School social worker and other services
A school counselor is a school social worker who specializes in preventive child welfare work (LSL Section 3 a (12.2.2010/88)). He or she helps students who have difficulties in school, in interpersonal relationships, or in problems or dilemmas related to their own growth and development. The counselor's job description includes supporting the well-being and activities of the entire school community and supporting cooperation between homes and schools.
The school counselor collaborates with youth work and its various agencies to monitor and promote the well-being of young people, as defined in the Social Welfare Act. If necessary, the school counselor refers the child/young person and family to other services, for example, a psychiatric nurse.
