Municipal council

MerikarviaThe highest decision-making authority in a municipality is exercised by the municipal council. MerikarviaThe municipal council has 21 members. The councilors and deputy councilors are elected in municipal elections held every four years.

The council elects the municipal board and the members and deputy members of the boards. In addition, the council elects auditors to audit the administration and finances of the municipality, based on the proposal of the audit board.

The matters to be dealt with by the council are prepared by the municipal board. The financial statements will be submitted to the council for consideration by the end of June. The municipal tax and property tax rates for the following calendar year must be decided by 17.11. November and the decision on the approval of the municipal budget and plan must be made no later than December.

The council meets approximately six times a year. The council meetings are open to the public, unless the council decides otherwise. The meetings can also be followed as live video broadcasts via the Internet (Youtube).

The number of councillors is 21, of which 12 belong to the Centre Party council group, 5 to the Social Democrats council group, 3 to the Coalition Party council group and 1 to the Left Alliance council group.
