Municipal cooperation

Merikarvian municipality is involved in many municipal cooperation models. According to the Framework Act, the tasks of a cooperation area can be assigned – in accordance with the Municipalities Act – to the host municipality, i.e. one municipality. In this case, a joint body of the municipalities in the area is established to handle the tasks, which can be a board, executive board or committee. The model is also referred to as the responsible municipality model, central municipality model or joint committee.

Municipalities can also enter into agreements on the performance of tasks in cooperation. Municipalities can agree that a task will be performed by another municipality on behalf of one or more municipalities. The agreement may concern the establishment of a joint office, the performance of official tasks as purchased services, or the establishment of a joint institution.
