open 10.-26.7.2026 Thu-Sat 11 am-13 pm

Free admission. Guide available. The Barrel Museum is also open to groups by prior arrangement.

The museum showcases the entire machinery chain of Arvo Esko’s fishware factory, along with a few preserved machines from other factories. Merikarvia has a long tradition of producing wooden containers, as long as the fishing industry has needed them. On an industrial scale, wooden containers were produced in such quantities and in so many workshops during the first half of the 1900th century that Merikarvia was effectively the Nordic center for this industry. Only the introduction of plastic containers and food safety regulations gradually replaced wood in the transportation and preservation of fish.

The Barrel Museum is Merikarvia-a museum maintained by the association, where you can learn about the making of fish barrels, which is important for the municipality's fishing history. The museum is located in an old grain warehouse near the kindergarten and school. The building is an important part of history as a guarantee of bread during the famine years. The space is two-storey, not accessible to the public.
