Summer is a good time to build a waste shed or fence, especially now that many residents of single-family homes and small houses have had more waste bins due to the introduction of biowaste bins. Bin sizes may also have changed in housing associations, which has increased the need for space at waste points. The Rauma Region Waste Management Authority challenged the residents of the Keräämö area to participate in the Satakunta Most Beautiful Waste Shed competition. The idea for the competition came from a Rauma resident who suggested it to the waste management authority so that everyone could get good ideas for building their sheds. Although waste management regulations do not require the construction of a waste shed, a functional waste shed can at best serve as a decoration for the yard and complete its appearance.
A well-designed and located waste disposal point improves living comfort, promotes sorting and increases yard safety. A housing association waste disposal point with clear and up-to-date instructions encourages residents
sort properly at home. This way, the materials can be directed to the manufacture of new products. The waste facility and containers should be placed as close to the driveway as possible, so that the emptying truck can get close to the waste containers without obstacles. “We get a surprising amount of feedback from drivers that the mixed waste container is on the side of the road, but they have to look for the biowaste container all over the property. A container placed next to the mixed waste container makes your everyday life and the driver’s work easier,” says circular economy planner Maija Nuotio.
Consider these things before building a waste shed:
Space usage: Think about how many bins you need now and in the future. Measure the positions of the corner posts according to the size of the waste shed you want to build. For example, one 240 liter waste bin requires an area of approximately 80 cm x 100 cm.
Functionality: Place the shed in a location that is easily accessible to both residents and the garbage truck. If you want a door to the shed, make sure the opening is a good size and that the door stays open when emptying.
Housing safety: Build the canopy on level ground. Do not build a threshold or steps into the canopy.
The most beautiful waste shed in Satakunta

The deadline for participation is August 31.8.2025, 2025. The finalists will be presented on the social media channels of Keräämö and Rauma Region Waste Management during autumn XNUMX.
