As the weather warms up, many homes begin spring cleaning their yards. Garden waste such as twigs, branches, leaves, moss and other raking waste accumulates during the cleaning process. Raking waste can be composted in your own yard, and it does not require a thermally insulated composter. Leaves from trees and shrubs, lawn clippings and other yard plants can be composted in a garden waste composter.
Garden waste should not be placed in a biowaste container that can be emptied. Biowaste in our area is decomposed into biogas at the Gasum plant, and garden waste is not included in this process because garden waste decomposes more slowly and thick branches and twigs can block the biowaste processing lines. Loose soil is particularly bad in a ventilated biowaste container, because it blocks the ventilation holes in the biowaste container and the container's properties are lost.
Garden waste must not be disposed of in ditches, parks or other public or private areas. Waste clogs ditches and prevents water flow. Please also note that burning brushwood is prohibited in urban areas. In sparsely populated areas, small amounts may be burned if there is no forest or grass fire warning for the area.
Compost, shred or deliver to collection points
- Raking waste can be composted in your own yard in a garden waste composter and thus utilize the nutrients it contains for the benefit of your own garden.
- Twigs and branches can be shredded into wood chips with a wood chipper. The wood chips can be used as compost bedding or as a decoration under shrubs.
- If you are unable to recycle raking waste in your own yard, deliver the waste to collection points.
Reception locations:
- Hankassuo waste center: raked waste and twigs free of charge.
- Tiiliruukki sorting station: raking waste (5 €/trailer load). Note! No twigs accepted.
- Municipal reception points, additional information here.
