The number of collection points for used textiles at the collection center will decrease, as the nationwide reception, sorting and sale of used textiles at the waste management of Southwest Finland will end. The reduction in operations is due to legislative changes, especially regarding the producer responsibility for used textiles defined by the EU. The changes will affect the collection center's further processing options for used textiles.
Collection points for used textiles in Kokemäki, Nakkila, Merikarviaand in Pori, the shopping centers in Puuvilla, Iso-Karhu and Icco will be removed at the end of October in week 44. After this, discarded textiles will only be collected at the Tiiliruukki sorting station, where the discarded textiles brought there are sorted into good-quality clothes and other usable textiles for reuse by various partners locally. “New options are currently being explored. It would be great if there was a party in our area that could reprocess discarded textiles and the raw materials they contain for wider use,” hopes circular economy planner Maija Nuotio.
End-of-life textiles are a challenging type of waste that easily suffers from contamination and soiling. In 2024, over 80% of the material collected from various collection points was delivered for energy recovery. Only 12% was still suitable for processing as end-of-life textiles and 2% was usable textiles. In total, approximately 50,000 kg of end-of-life textiles were collected.
The oversupply of textiles and low recycling is a problem worldwide. The best thing to do would be to pay attention to your own consumption habits and take care of the clothes you already own, and only buy what you need. In the Pori region, repair companies can be found, for example: From the Korjaa.se service.
