Let the biowaste breathe and prevent odors

Many problems with biowaste stem from the same cause: excessive moisture. In the summer, moist and warm biowaste attracts flies and their larvae. In the winter, a wet biowaste bag can freeze in the emptying biowaste container, preventing the container from emptying properly. When biowaste remains drier and airier, problems are reduced year-round.

When biowaste is sealed tightly under a lid in the kitchen, moisture remains in the container and the biowaste begins to rot. It is this rotting that causes the unpleasant odors associated with biowaste.

“Think of a piece of bread or a tangerine forgotten on the table. In the open air, they usually dry out and don't start to smell. In a closed bag, however, they get damp and start to rot easily. The best friend of a biowaste collector is air,” says Maija Nuotio, circular economy planner at Keräämö.

The most functional organic waste container is one that allows air to circulate. For example, the container can have holes on the sides, which practically acts as a holder for the organic waste bag. It is not a good idea to use a lid on the container. Airy storage helps keep organic waste drier and the kitchen fresher. “Flies in the composter usually indicate that the litter has been used sparingly. The purpose of the litter is to provide enough oxygen for the decomposers working in the composter,” says Maija Nuotio.

How to increase the airiness of biowaste

  • You can reduce humidity and prevent odors with a few easy ways:
  • Absorb fats, oils and liquids from cooking with kitchen paper.
  • Let damp organic waste dry for a while before placing it in the organic waste bag.
  • Place paper towels, newspaper, or a piece of eggshell at the bottom of the bag to absorb moisture.
  • Prefer a paper bag or a bag folded from newspaper, they breathe best.
  • Note: Close the organic waste bag carefully before taking it to the outdoor organic waste container.

With small changes, biowaste collection will remain cleaner, odor-free, and easier throughout the year.
